The Orpella Lab studies how the brain supports speech production, speech perception, and language learning. We combine cognitive neuroscience methods—including MEG, MRI, TMS, psychophysics, computational modeling, and machine learning—to develop theoretically, computationally, and biologically grounded accounts of how these abilities are achieved and implemented in typical and atypical brains.


Current projects examine the neurobiological mechanisms of persistent developmental stuttering, the informational architecture of speech perception, speech motor learning, and auditory–motor integration in reading ability.
